Historical Background
The Second Schleswig War was fought over a territorial dispute over the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein, which had historically been under Danish rule but had significant German populations. Prussia and Austria opposed Danish claims to Schleswig.
The battle lasted for several weeks, including bombardment and siege, culminating in the decisive battle on 18 April 1864. The Danish forces were forced to retreat. The Prussian army won the battle thanks to its superior numbers and more modern tactics. The Danish losses amounted to about 1,700 people, and the Prussian side lost about 1,200 soldiers.
The Battle of Dybbøl, despite its tragic outcome for Denmark, played an important role in the formation of national identity. Today, this day reminds us of the importance of unity, overcoming difficulties and preserving historical memory.
